About AMLD

AI will be everywhere. Machine learning, the underlying technology, has been transforming our world for years, with its impact growing exponentially. By 2017, the profound implications of this transformation were impossible to ignore. That's when my colleagues and I at EPFL decided it was time to create a platform for open discussion and learning about AI's growing influence. This realization led us to launch the very first Applied Machine Learning Days.

At AMLD, we've always aimed to break down silos. Most technology conferences cater to a single crowd, but we wanted to create something different. AMLD brings together scientists, industry leaders, policymakers, and researchers in one place. It's this mix that makes AMLD special. When these diverse voices collide, we get richer debates about AI's potential and more innovative ideas for its future. That's the real magic of AMLD: sparking conversations and collaborations that wouldn't happen anywhere else.

One of our proudest moments was seeing AMLD Africa launch in 2020. A group around EPFL students and alumni saw AI's potential to drive positive change in Africa and took action. Their initiative is a perfect example of why we started AMLD in the first place.

Looking back, it's amazing to see how far we've come from those early days of AMLD. What started as a small gathering has grown into the largest yearly conference on campus, spearheaded by the EPFL AI Center. I'm a boundless optimist about the positive changes that AMLD and AMLD Africa will continue to drive - in advancing technology, and in bringing people together to shape a better world with technology.
